Tasks of the coordinators and commissioners
With the aim of deepening the friendly and good-neighbourly relations between the two countries, Governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Poland appointed Coordinators for Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation. Since December 2009 Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Cornelia Pieper serves as the new Coordinator.

Disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation are priorities of German foreign and security policy. The post of Federal Government Commissioner for Disarmament and Arms Control was created in 1965 as a response to the close link between the efforts to reunify Germany and the disarmament negotiations of the major powers.

Ambassador Bernd Mützelburg is the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. His task is to further intensify Germany’s diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan and Pakistan and to prepare the Afghanistan Conference due to take place in late January 2010.

Human rights form the basis of every community, of peace and of justice in the world. Respect for human rights is enshrined in the constitution in Germany, as it is in many other countries. Consequently it is a daily consideration for state activity at all levels. Against this backdrop the position of Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid was established at the Federal Foreign Office in November 1998. Günter Nooke has occupied the post since 9 March 2006.
