In this era of multilateralism, public diplomacy and the need for a citizen-friendly approach on the part of government, a new Foreign Service ethos is called for. Speed of response, flexibility and willingness to innovate as well as sensitivity vis-à-vis the concerns of our partners are just as important as a clear understanding of our own interests. The Foreign Service needs to abandon some of its old ways.
