Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle on the latest attacks in Iraq

01.10.2013

Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (1 October 2013) in connection with the attacks in Iraq on Monday, which claimed dozens of lives and injured well over a hundred people:

We condemn the appalling attacks in Iraq in the strongest terms. I appeal to all those with positions of responsibility in Iraq to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to put an end to the wave of terror which has been plaguing the country for several months.
A concerted effort is now urgently needed to protect the country and its people and prevent it from descending into civil war.

Last Saturday Foreign Minister Westerwelle met his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. During their talks the ministers discussed the situation not only in Iraq, but also in the entire region. Iraq has been particularly affected by the conflict in Syria. Since the conflict in the neighbouring country erupted, the security situation in Iraq has worsened considerably. For the first time in many years, violence has also spread to the provincial capital Erbil in the north of the country.
