Federal Government helps earthquake victims in Turkey

Markus Löning, Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid, issued the following statement today (26 October) in Berlin:

“Today our Turkish friends asked for our assistance in providing for the needs of the victims of the earthquake in eastern Turkey. Of course, we immediately promised to help. We are providing 500 winter-proof tents, 2500 blankets and 14 tent heaters, which are to be sent to the earthquake region promptly.
The German Red Cross will transport the aid supplies to the region with 360,000 euro in support from the Federal Foreign Office.
I am glad that we can thus help people in need living in a region that has had close ties to Germany for decades.”

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle expressed his condolences to his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on the day of the earthquake (23 October) and offered German help in dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake.
