Foreign Minister Westerwelle calls Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi

16.09.2011

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle today (16 September) spoke on the phone to Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

A Federal Foreign Office spokesman said:

Foreign Minister Westerwelle assured Aung San Suu Kyi of the German Government’s support in her commitment to comprehensive political, economic and social reform in Myanmar.
They agreed that over and above the meeting of Aung San Suu Kyi and President Thein Sein on 19 August there were some indications of incipient change in Myanmar.
Federal Minister Westerwelle told Aung San Suu Kyi that her courageous, sustained commitment to democratic change and human rights had long since made her a source of hope for the people of Myanmar as well as an inspiration for all freedom-loving people across the world.

The German Government has taken note of the Myanmar Government’s announcements regarding reform. The important thing now is for words to be followed rapidly by deeds. One of these must be a clear and sustainable improvement in the human rights situation, including the release of all political prisoners.

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi are two of the figureheads of the campaign for a universally recognized human rights logo. The winning logo will be presented in New York on 23 September alongside the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.
