Foreign Minister Westerwelle condemns attack in Alexandria

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has voiced shock and sorrow in the face of the attack on a Coptic church in the north Egyptian city of Alexandria. This morning (1 January 2011) he issued the following statement in this connection:

“I am shocked and saddened by the attack on a church in Alexandria. We grieve with the relatives and friends of those who have perished and wish those who have been injured a speedy recovery. I condemn in the strongest possible terms this brutal act perpetrated against peaceful worshippers at a mass to welcome in the New Year. The cynicism shown by their assailants highlights how important it is to take a firm stand against terrorism and religious intolerance.”

According to the latest reports, the night-time attack left over 20 people dead and twice as many injured.
