“Writing the Berlin Way”Exhibition on the DAAD’s Artists-in-Berlin Programme

11.11.2010

From 10 to 30 November 2010 the Artists-in-Berlin Programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is putting on an exhibition of photographs in the atrium of the Federal Foreign Office. Entitled “Writing the Berlin Way”, the exhibition will show portraits of over 30 of the Programme’s alumni who are all world-famous writers. Over the past decade these have included three winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature: Mario Vargas Llosa, Imre Kertész and Gao Xingjian.

Since 1963 the Artists-in-Berlin Programme has every year invited some 20 outstanding and internationally acclaimed artists in the field of visual arts, literature, film and music to spend a year living and working in the city György Konrád called a “free port of the arts”. The Federal Foreign Office provides annual funding in the order of 1.5 million euro.

The portraits of the 30 renowned writers who have sojourned in Berlin give a vivid impression of the city’s role as a living laboratory of the arts, the stimulating environment it provides and how it has inspired its guests to write the Berlin way.

The exhibition will be open from Monday to Friday, 8.00 to 20.00 h, in the atrium of the Federal Foreign Office, Werderscher Markt 1, 10117 Berlin.
