Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together: The German-Chinese Esplanade and its Bamboo Pavilions come to Berlin

07.10.2009

Tomorrow (8 October), the Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut are opening a new exhibition in the Atrium (Lichthof). It showcases the successful festival organized by the Federal Foreign Office in China entitled Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together. The highlight of the exhibition is the German-Chinese Esplanade and the pavilions designed specially by Markus Heinsdorff and made out of bamboo and high-tech materials.

Since 2007 Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together has stopped off in five Chinese cities and is currently stationed at the central Chinese metropolis Wuhan. So far more than three-quarters of a million Chinese have visited the festival which focuses on sustainable urbanization.

One of the festival’s hallmarks is the bamboo pavilion. Made of resource-saving materials, it is an example of ecological yet creative architecture. The exhibition includes a walk-through model of a bamboo pavilion.

The opening of the exhibition is open to the press. Speeches will be made by Ambassador Wolfgang Röhr, Head of the Task Force Germany-China in the Federal Foreign Office, Dr Bruno Fischli, Head of Special Tasks of the Executive Committee of the Goethe-Institut, and the artist Markus Heinsdorff.
