Federal Minister Steinmeier congratulates Hillary Clinton:"Let us fill the transatlantic partnership with new life"

03.12.2008

Last Monday the future president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, nominated Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to be Secretary of State. The appointment still needs to be confirmed by the US Senate. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier congratulated Hillary Clinton today (3 December). The congratulatory letter included the following excerpts:

"Please accept my sincere congratulations on your nomination as Secretary of State of the United States of America. I was very pleased to hear that you and Barack Obama want to work together to shape US foreign policy.

We are all facing major challenges: climate change, the financial crisis, disarmament, fighting terrorism – just to name a few. However, these challenges also present great opportunities. It is up to us to develop new solutions for the major issues of our time. In doing this, we can build upon the solid foundation of German-American relations and the close cooperation based on mutual trust between our two countries. Let us confront these challenges together and fill the transatlantic partnership with new life. I am convinced that we need this bridge now more than ever.

For your new post I wish you all the best, great strength, courage, perseverance and every success. I look forward to meeting with you soon and working together intensively in a spirit of partnership."
