Minister of State Gloser travels to the Second Euro-African Conference on Migration and Development

24.11.2008

Günter Gloser, Minister of State for Europe, will take part in the Second Euro-African Conference on Migration and Development, which is being held in Paris on Tuesday (25 November).

The ministerial meeting, in which representatives from 60 European and African countries will participate, follows on from the first conference held in Rabat in July 2006. The meeting will focus on issues relating to the protection of refugees, border management, readmission, as well as legal migration and vocational training for migrants.

Minister of State Gloser issued the following statement today (24 November) on the margins of the Franco-German Council of Ministers in Paris:

"The Rabat Process is a visible sign that we have made considerable progress towards a partnership on migration issues among countries of origin, transit and destination in Europe and Africa. I believe it's crucial that we agree here in Paris on concrete goals and operative measures for the coming years."

The conference is to adopt a multiannual cooperation programme based on the key elements of the Global Approach to Migration, i.e. it is to contain regulations on legal migration, the joint fight against illegal migration as well as improved coordination and harmonization of migration and development policies. The aim of the cooperation programme is to strengthen cooperation between the European and African countries along the west African migration routes by agreeing on concrete measures.
