Federal Minister Steinmeier on the meeting of the Friends of Pakistan Group

In the light of the meeting of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan Group which took place in Abu Dhabi on 17 November 2008, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin:

"I welcome the fact that the Friends of Pakistan Group has agreed on an extensive programme of work. We have thus reaffirmed our determination to work together to support Pakistan in tackling the current crisis.

In order to ensure Pakistan's financial stabilization, we also need an early agreement on an assistance programme by the International Monetary Fund and its complete implementation.

I would like to thank the Government of the United Arab Emirates for organizing today's meeting."

The Friends of Democratic Pakistan Group consists of about a dozen countries. Federal Minister Steinmeier is one of the initiators of the Group, which was launched on the margins of the UN General Assembly in September to support the democratically elected government in the face of the critical situation within Pakistan and the current financial and energy crises.

In Abu Dhabi, the delegates agreed on a plan to coordinate cooperation in the spheres of security, development, energy supply and the development of democratic institutions. The German delegation was headed by Ambassador Blomeyer-Bartenstein, Commissioner for Asian Affairs at the Federal Foreign Office. In January, meetings of experts will take place, followed later on by another meeting at ministerial level.
