Working towards a political and humanitarian solution for the Congo

06.11.2008

Yesterday evening Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier again spoke on the phone to Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, and Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, the newly-appointed Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

During the conversations Federal Minister Steinmeier expressed his grave concern about the current situation in eastern Congo. The recent outbreak of fighting had resulted in large streams of refugees whom the aid organizations have only partially been able to reach. Federal Minister Steinmeier appealed to both of his interlocutors to use their influence to improve the humanitarian situation.

Ahead of the planned summit in Nairobi, Federal Minister Steinmeier also addressed the current efforts to find a political solution to the conflict in eastern Congo. The Governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda should use the summit as a platform to work out a viable political solution. Federal Minister Steinmeier reminded his interlocutors that dialogue is the key to finding ways out of the crisis. The participation of Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, was an indication of the international community's high expectations of the summit.
