Minister of State Günter Gloser takes part in the foreign ministers' meeting of the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean in Marseilles

31.10.2008

From 3 to 4 November 2008 Günter Gloser, Minister of State for Europe, will travel to Marseilles to take part in the meeting of foreign ministers within the framework of Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation (the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean).

The meeting will be attended by the representatives of the 27 EU member states, as well as those of almost all other Mediterranean countries. The main themes of the meeting will be the concretization of the decisions adopted at the Mediterranean Summit on 13 July in Paris and the future institutional form of Mediterranean cooperation. At the Paris Summit the heads of state and government decided to continue their cooperation regarding the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean.

The Barcelona Process, which has been in existence for thirteen years now, is – alongside the European Neighbourhood Policy – one of the central pillars of EU-Mediterranean relations. The common aim is to make the Mediterranean a region of peace, stability and prosperity. Concrete projects aimed at tackling the Mediterranean's existing challenges are to be implemented to that end as part of an equal partnership. At the same time the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean serves as a forum for trustful, open and constructive dialogue.
