24.10.2008

On Monday (27 October) Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will embark on a four-day trip to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (27 to 30 October).

His discussions there will focus on bilateral, regional and international issues.

Special attention will be given to the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan. All of the countries the Minister will visit are members of the international Friends of Democratic Pakistan Group, which was founded at the United Nations in New York in September. Other important issues on the trip will be discussing how to overcome the current financial crisis and deal with the situation in the Middle East.

On his first stop the Federal Foreign Minister will meet with President Zardari and Foreign Minister Qureshi in Islamabad. Talks with representatives from civil society are also planned. Pakistan recently elected a new government after the resignation of President Musharraf. The country also plays a key role for the international engagement in Afghanistan.

Political talks are planned with the King and Foreign Minister in Saudi Arabia. In addition, consultations with the Finance Minister, the President of the Saudi Arabian central bank and the Governor of Riyadh are on the agenda.

The third stop of the trip is the United Arab Emirates. In Abu Dhabi the Federal Foreign Minister will meet with the Crown Prince, a Deputy Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister. A meeting with the board of the investment authority ADIA is also scheduled. On Wednesday (29 October) the Minister will officially open the German International School's new building. After moving to its new home, the school is now one of the most modern German schools abroad.

The Federal Foreign Minister will be accompanied by a business and cultural delegation on his trip.
