Federal Foreign Office helps children in Georgia

02.10.2008

The Federal Foreign Office is donating approx. 610,000 euro to help child victims of the conflict in Georgia. The money will go to two projects in Georgia run by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

According to UNHCR figures, 118,000 people fled their homes as a result of the recent fighting in the country, in addition to the around 222,000 who had fled previous outbreaks of fighting. These internally displaced persons include an estimated 40,000 children.

Many of these children are from areas where fighting took place and have endured traumatic experiences such as the loss of their homes and separation from their families. To prevent them suffering long-term damage, children in conflict zones need special care, attention and professional support.

Germany's contribution will help UNICEF provide counselling for these internally displaced children and run information campaigns about the dangers of unexploded ordnance targeted at families and children in areas that have been the scene of fighting.
