Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier opens Universal Children's Day festival and launches the new Federal Foreign Office children's website

18.09.2008

At 11 a.m. this Sunday (21 September) the festivities at Potsdamer Platz and the surrounding area to mark Universal Children's Day will commence. The focus of the celebrations is the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989, which visitors both big and small can learn about in the "street of children's rights", amongst other attractions. The Federal Foreign Office, which is actively involved with the United Nations in children's rights, will also be represented at the celebrations.

At 1 p.m. the patron, Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will officially open the festival at the Marlene-Dietrich-Platz. Other speakers will include Thomas Krüger, President of the Children's Charity of Germany (Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk), Dr Sandor Peisch, Ambassador of Hungary (this year's partner country) and Andreas Wappler, representative of the principal sponsor, VW.

This will be followed by Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier launching the new children's web pages on the Federal Foreign Office website (www.kinder.diplo.de), at the Foreign Office stand. From Sunday, children will be able to visit these pages to learn interesting facts on issues of foreign policy. Here, simply worded explanations will answer questions such as: what does the United Nations do? And what are human rights?

At the end of Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier's visit there will be a press tour. Together with Ambassador Peisch and representatives of children's rights organizations, he will visit the stands representing the Children's Charity of Germany, Unicef Germany and the partner country, Hungary.
