Yesterday's attack in Kabul targeted the international aid effort

The attack yesterday (14 January) on the Serena Hotel in Kabul left at least six people dead and several injured, some of them seriously. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today in Berlin condemning the attack:

"I categorically condemn yesterday's attack on the Serena Hotel in Kabul. To those who have lost loved ones and friends I offer my sympathy and condolences. To those who were injured I wish a speedy recovery.

This attack was directed also against the international community and its support for the rebuilding of Afghanistan. I am particularly shocked that the perpetrators targeted my Norwegian colleague Jonas Gahr-Støre and his aides.

Those responsible must now be found with all speed and brought to justice.

The international community will not be intimidated by this attack. We have pledged our word to the people of Afghanistan and we intend to honour it. Together with the Afghan Government we want to help the people of this country build a more peaceful, free and prosperous future."
