300,000 euro for humanitarian aid in Kenya

04.01.2008

Several hundred people have died in violent clashes in Kenya following the announcement last Sunday (30 December 2007) of the results of the presidential election. In some areas an estimated 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and houses and shops have been plundered and destroyed. The worst hit areas are the capital Nairobi and the country's western provinces.

The Federal Foreign Office responded today (4 January) by donating 300,000 euro in emergency aid. The money will help fund aid operations for internally displaced people run by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Food, household equipment and hygiene items are urgently needed. Emergency medical care and water supplies will also be provided.
